Small teams and operations staff reach for Zapier to connect cloud tools and remove repetitive data entry without maintaining custom integrations.
n8n
Self-hostable visual workflow automation
What is n8n?
n8n connects apps, APIs, and data sources through node-based workflows. It is especially good at technical automations that need branching logic, custom code, or control over where data runs.
Where n8n earns its place
n8n sits between simple no-code connectors and writing an integration service from scratch. Its canvas handles triggers, loops, conditions, data transformations, retries, and error paths without hiding the underlying JSON. JavaScript or Python can fill gaps when visual nodes are not enough. That flexibility suits internal operations, data synchronization, lead routing, notifications, and API-heavy back-office work. The tradeoff is a steeper learning curve than tools designed around short, linear recipes.
Choosing cloud or self-hosting
- Community Edition: Free to run on your own infrastructure under n8n's fair-code license.
- n8n Cloud: Managed hosting with limits based mainly on workflow executions.
- Enterprise: Adds governance, collaboration, security, and support capabilities.
Self-hosting provides excellent control over credentials, execution data, and network access, but someone must maintain the database, upgrades, backups, workers, and queue configuration. Cloud removes that work and bills a complete run as one execution rather than counting every node separately. Costs can still rise quickly for frequently triggered workflows. The editor is capable, though debugging complex expressions and nested item structures takes practice.
Pricing

Highlights & limitations
- Self-hosting offers unusual control over data location, credentials, networking, and retention.
- Cloud billing counts workflow executions rather than charging separately for every successful node.
- Expressions and code nodes handle transformations that simpler automation builders struggle with.
- Execution history exposes node inputs and outputs, making failed runs easier to inspect.
- The editor expects users to understand APIs, JSON, authentication, and data structures.
- Running it yourself creates real maintenance work around upgrades, backups, scaling, and security.
- Complex workflows can become difficult to navigate and document on a large canvas.
- Several governance and collaboration capabilities are reserved for higher-priced plans.
- Its fair-code license is more restrictive than a conventional open-source license, especially for commercial embedding or competing hosted services.
